On the Trail to Brown Bay

Day 5, Saturday February 8 ~ Brown Bay

The first stop after leaving camp was the Annaberg parking lot where the hikers climbed out of the vehicles.  They walked along the shore of Leinster Bay and then uphill to the reformatory.  From there they continued to Brown Bay.  Everyone else continued to a trail head just beyond Coral Bay. From here it was a short walk up hill and then down hill to Brown Bay.  This secluded beach had excellent snorkeling with lots of coral.

Day 6, Sunday February 9 ~ A Day of Rest

Some attended the Interdenominational Worship Service by the Cinnamon Bay beach.  Others went to worship at the historic, picturesque Moravian Church in Coral Bay.  The afternoon was free.  Many spent time at the Cinnamon Bay beach swimming, snorkeling, and resting.  Don led a 3 mile loop hike from the campground.

Day 7, Monday February 10 ~ Reef Bay Trip and Mid-Camp Dinner

Many joined the ranger led Reef Bay 3-mile downhill hike that starts at Center Line Road.  They explored several vegetation zones, the petroglyphs, and sugar mill ruins.  From the end of the trail at Reef Bay a boat took the participants back to Cruz Bay.  During the morning was on and off rain and some showers.  Ralph didn't participate in this hike, so, sorry, no pictures.

In the evening was the Mid-Camp Dinner at Shipwreck Landing in Coral Bay.  The group picture that is on the opening page of these photos was taken just before dinner.

Day 8, Tuesday February 11 ~ Salt Pond Bay and Ram Head

Most of us drove to the Southeast corner of the island where after a short walk we came to Salt Pond Bay.  The ecology here is quite different from the northern shore; it is dry and desert-like.  Many took a short hike to see Salt Pond, Drunk Bay, and/or especially Ram Head.  Everyone enjoyed the good swimming and snorkeling.  Don, Bill, and Judy walked from Cinnamon Bay to Salt Pond Bay.  They completed the 8-mile hike by 1 PM.  During the return to camp Don and Lois unfortunately had a flat tire.  One thing led to another and they eventually got a different and better truck.
