Iceland Days 7-8
Day 7, Friday June 6 ~ Skaftafell National Park
There was driving rain over night and in the morning, so we rested. Around 11:30 we got going and went to the Skaftafell National Park visitor center. Skaftafell is at the edge of the Vatanajokull icecap, the third largest glacier in the world. With the summit of Iceland reigning over its surroundings, glacier tongues crawling down every valley and a volcano sleeping under the icecap, the landscape is quite impressive. Then we took a walk at a nearby location.
We had lunch near a waterfall. Then hiked along and over a ridge to a large river plain. We had a bit of sun and then it became gray again.
When we returned to our guesthouse near the local church it was raining.
Day 8, Saturday June 7 ~ Jokulsarlon
From Skaftafell we continued east. We stopped for a while at the well known Jokulsarlon, a lake full of icebergs from the icecap. We took a short walk and then a "boat" ride. In a hybrid vehicle, we started on land and then motored about the lake and to the edge of the glacier.

Lunch was at the side of the road. Later we took a two-hour loop walk above and along the coast. Upon our return to the vehicle it was discovered that one of the trailer's bearings was busted. We piled/squeezed into the van with our luggage and continued on to Berunes. Ingi was on the phone chasing a bearing for the trailer.
