Iceland Days 3 - 4

Day 3, Monday June 2 ~ Thorsmork

Today was rather gray again.  After a leisurely breakfast we left the hut at 9:55 for an approximately 10 mile hike. We started hiking up the valley and came to a bad river crossing. So we went back up to a ridge where we had lunch. It was a cool 52 degrees. Then we wandered along a ridge and over to slab the steep side of the next ridge with incredible rocks both above and below us.  After a brief rest stop we came to a huge plateau with very spongy moss and overviews of the Kross valley and two huge glaciers.  On the way back it began to drizzle and then rain.  We were back at the hut at 6:30 and  Ingi prepared our dinner again.

Day 4, Tuesday June 3 ~ Thorsmork and Fimmvorduhals Pass

From our hut we drove across numerous streams to another branch of the valley where we started our hike.  We went up over a "Cat's Back" (we call it a knife edge) and a snowfield to a high plateau on the trail to Fimmvorduhals Pass. Enroute we saw a ptarmigan and some orchids and the sun came out.  We had lunch at 12:30 on the plateau with wondrous views.  We returned on the same trail to the van with time to play in the snow on the way.  Then we drove out of the Tormsmork valley and along the coast with a stop at the Skogafoss waterfall before reaching our lodging in the town of Vik.  Dinner included blueberry cheesecake.
