February 22 - Central Otago Wineries

After saying goodbye to our AMC friends, we joined a small group tour of several Central Otago wineries that was led by Paul of Wine Connections. Central Otago is an informal name for the inland part of the Otago Region.  During the day we visited the wineries of Gibbston Valley, Carrick Wines, Northburn Station, Wooing Tree, and Mt. Rosa.  We tasted quite a variety of wines including Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

We made a brief stop in Old Cromwell Town. This was created from old town buildings that were to be inundated with the creation of a reservoir for a power dam.

On the way back to Queenstown we went past the AJ Hackett bungy jumping bridge and gorge.

At the end of the day we decided we liked best the 2013 Gibbston Valley Riesling and some of the more expensive ($80NZ/bottle) 2010 Pinot Noirs.

After returning to Queenstown we walked through the Queenstown Gardens.

For supper we went to one of the highest rated restaurants in Queenstown: Fergburger.

We had prime New Zealand Beef.  Other options included lamb, wild deer, roasted pork, blue cod, and chicken.
