February 17 - Milford Track - Day 3
Today is to be the most spectacular and demanding day of the Milford Track! We climbed a series of switchbacks to cross Mackinnon Pass. When we arose it was very gray and heavy out. At breakfast the guides told us that the forecast was for rain mid-day and high winds of 70-90kph at the Pass.
At first the track continued in the woods.![]() |
Then we crossed an avalanche area.![]() |

Gradually we climbed higher and left the dense woods and ![]() |
entered different ecological areas with many kinds of wildflowers. ![]() |

Mid-morning it began to drizzle.![]() |

As we ascended to the pass the rain became heavier![]() |
and there were innumerable waterfalls.![]() |
Then we reached the pass and the memorial to Mackinnon.![]() |
The wind here was ferocious and a few were even blown off their feet.![]() |
The pass is the divide between the Clinton![]() |
and Arthur River valleys.![]() |
We paused for lunch at the Pass Hut.![]() |

As we approached Quinton Lodge there were stairs and boardwalks.![]() |

Once we have arrived, some made an optional trek to see the Sutherland Falls, the fifth highest waterfall in the world. |

At the Lodge everyone made use of the extensive drying facilities.![]() |
