February 25 - Catlins

Today we took the Catlins Spectacular bus (operated by HeadFirst) from Dunedin to Invercargill. This slow route bus made several stops along the way. The Catlins (sometimes referred to as The Catlins Coast) comprises an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand.  It includes the South Island's southernmost point, Slope Point.  A rugged, sparsely populated area, the Catlins features a scenic coastal landscape and dense temperate rainforest, both of which harbor many endangered species of birds.  The coast attracts numerous marine mammals, among them New Zealand fur seals and Hooker's sea lions.

Shortly we stopped and took a walk to the lighthouse at Nugget Point that is in the distance.

On the rocks were a number of sea lions.

We stopped at the next beach to see

Oyster Catchers

and sea lions.

Our lunch stop.

At the next stop we followed a path along a stream to

McLean Falls

Lots of sheep.

A beach with very rough surf.

We arrived in Invercargill about 7pm and were dropped off at the motel where we spent the night.
