Enroute to Trinidad and the Pax Guest House
The following is a very abbreviated description of the first couple of days of the trip. The trip was supposed to start with most participants flying from JFK early in the morning of December 27th and arriving in Trinidad just after lunch that day. However, mid day on the 26th it started snowing in the northeast. Although some took longer than expected all did get to a Days Inn near the airport. Although Caribbean Airlines continued to claim (phone and web) that the flight would depart on time, all other news sources reported that JFK would be closed until mid day on the 27th. The group did get to the airport and then to the terminal where chaos reined. Caribbean Air then claimed that our flight would leave very early the next morning. Consequently, we spent the nights on cots and cardboard on the airport floor. In the morning we went to the posted gate only to be told the gate had been changed and we would have to go through security again. We arrived at the gate about 4am. A plane was there but there was no crew and the baggage hadn't been loaded. It took until early afternoon to resolve those issues. Meanwhile amongst the throngs of people waiting for this and other flights tempers flared. Eventually the plane did leave and we flew to Trinidad where we were met by a representative of the Pax Guest House. We got to the Guest House about 11pm and were greeted with drinks and sandwiches about 34 hours later than planned. Three participants had flown as scheduled from Fort Lauderdale on the 26th and they had two leisurely days on their own. One participant was to fly from Boston and her flight was changed and then cancelled. She never did join the group.

On Trinidad we stayed at the delightful Pax Guest House which is operated by Oda and Gerard. The Pax Guest House is adjacent to the Mount St. Benedict Monastery high on the mountain overlooking Port of Spain. The Guest House was built in 1916 to fulfill the Benedictine tradition of welcoming travelers.
