In the morning we left Castelnuovo di Garfagnana by train.  We had lunch while waiting for a connecting train in Aulla.  After lunch we arrived in Levanto where we checked in to the Hotel Nazionale (http://www.knowital.com/liguria/laspezia/nazionale/hotel1.html).  We then did an approximately 3-hour hike on Trail #1 from Levanto to Monterosso, the first of the five Cinque Terre towns (http://www.cinqueterre.it/index.html) which are protected by being in the Cinque Terre National Park. On a rocky trail we went up and over the seaside cliffs that separate the towns.  We returned to Levanto by the local train.  Dinner was in the Hotel Nazionale.
